  1. Rite practised by a number of Christian
  2. denominations, including Roman Catholic,
  3. Anglican, and Orthodox, in which a previously
  4. baptized person is admitted to full
  5. membership of the church. In Reform Judaism
  6. there is often a confirmation service several
  7. years after the bar or bat mitzvah
  8. (initiation into the congregation). Christian
  9. confirmation is believed to give the
  10. participant the gift of the Holy Spirit. In
  11. the Anglican church it consists in the laying
  12. on of hands by a bishop, while in the Roman
  13. Catholic and Orthodox churches the
  14. participant is anointed with oil. Except in
  15. the Orthodox churches, where infant
  16. confirmation is usual, the rite takes place
  17. around early adolescence. Until recently a
  18. child preparing for confirmation was required
  19. to learn by heart a series of questions and
  20. answers known as a catechism.
